How to Help Your Child Reduce Careless Mistakes in Math
1. Write BIG and NEAT
When solving an equation, your child should write the numbers largely and line them up neatly.
You can also encourage your child to use scrap paper when solving multiple problems.
Writing large and legibly will help your child avoid careless mistakes.
2. Read with FINGER
When reading a question, your child’s finger should follow along with the words and numbers.
Using “following finger” will help your child read more carefully and solve problems more accurately.
3. Read SLOWLY
It’s important to read questions slowly, specifically word problems.
Keep in mind the following:
-Stop at each period. The period is a stop sign!
– Underline important numbers or words.
– Read each question twice.
4. SHOW WORK
By showing the steps token to solve a problem, your child can receive partial credit and it will help your child review work effectively.
Draw a circle or box around the had answer. If your child uses scrap paper, make sure he/she writes the number of the problem next to the work for that problem.
5. CHECK WORK
Review each of the steps used to solve a problem. Your child can also plug the answer back into the variable (for algebra problems) to check if the equation works out. By checking work diligently,
your child can avoid careless mistakes.
