It’s easy to spend a lot of time critiquing and correcting your child.
It’s extremely important to spend time and energy to give your child opportunities to shine and feel great about themselves.
The secret is that it doesn’t actually take a lot of effort to show your child that you value their opinion, that you think highly of them, and that you can share engaging experiences together.
Here are 5 simple ways to make your child feel terrific:
1. Do something nice, unannounced:
Bring your child’s favorite ice cream when you pick your child up from school.
2. Go for a 1-on-1 meal or dessert with only that child (no other siblings):
Find a moment to tell your child how proud you are of something specific your child has done.
3. Display your child’s artwork or trophy in a thoughtful place in your home:
You could place artwork in the living room and proudly point it out to others in the presence of your child.
4. Ask for your child’s advice about something – then follow it – then thank your child for it:
(Note: It’s recommended to ask your child’s advice for something you won’t mind following!)
Then ask your child which outfit you should wear to a family event – then wear it.Then, thank your child for his or her suggestion. You can also tell others in the presence of your child that your child picked the outfit and has good taste.
5. Complement your child on something specific that may go unnoticed:
Tell your child that you really appreciate your child’s ability to be very patient when you’re dealing with the baby.
Doing these simple things can make your child feel like a rock star! And furthermore, they can stick with your child for many years!
